Do you sleep better when it rains? Here's why.

Have you ever heard someone say they sleep better with the sound of rain? Well, this person is absolutely right! Here's why.

According to American researchers, the sound of a downpour, a thunderstorm and waves can trigger a mechanism of relaxation and sleep in some people.

Our brain assimilates these noises as reassuring sounds and uses them to block out other more disturbing ones. For example, an alarm, our phone ringing, a cry, a crying baby, etc.

To take the test, the researchers set off a high-intensity hospital alarm. Result: 90% of patients woke up in alert mode. On the contrary, with the sound of rain, a thunderstorm or waves, the brain understands that all is well. He is not alarmed, on the contrary, he continues to relax.

In fact, if you love special bedtime sounds, there are now several apps available to help you sleep!

Besides, the rain is not the only one to make you sleep.

Downpours, thunderstorms, waves ... American researchers explain how its noises manage to trigger a mechanism of relaxation and sleep in some people.

The sound of the waves crashing against the edge of the beach, the rolling of the distant storm mixed with a gentle downpour ... All you have to do is close your eyes and let yourself be lulled by the noise. Why do these sounds help some people sleep? This is the answer to which researchers from the University of Orfeu Buxton (United States) tried to answer. According to them, the brain assimilates these kinds of noises as "friendly" sounds and uses them to block those it considers "disturbing".

They help the brain to understand that all is well

To test their hypothesis, the researchers set off a hospital alarm first at 40 decibels (almost a whisper) then at 70. Result? The patients were woken up 90% of the time. "We are above all primates when a noise, even a distant one, appears our brain goes on alert to warn others of an imminent threat," explains the scientific site Live Science.

So-called "calming" sounds like the sea or the rain act the same, but in the opposite direction. They help the brain to understand that all is well, calm the nerves making the atmosphere conducive to falling asleep.
